MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR LOCK DEVELOPMENT FOR DERBY?
Exciting news in the West Kimberley today, with the revelation that shire presidents have been briefed on early-stages planning for a lock system to permit bulk exports and military ships to dock in Derby.
The ABC understands businessmen Kerry Stokes and Tim Roberts are driving the project.
In a statement, the proponents WGPL Property No3 and ACE Infrastructure have emphasised it's early days for the project.
"[The companies] have entered discussions with the Shire of Derby-West Kimberley for the proposed leasing of undeveloped land within the Derby Port," they have said in a statement to ABC Kimberley.
"The lease constitutes the start of a detailed feasibility study of the area's growing infrastructure needs... following the study, a full consultation process will commence with the shire, state and federal governments."
"Derby is located in a strategic area of North-Western Australia and all local stakeholders agree it presents an exciting opportunity for the local community, wider region, state, and Australia - albeit in the face of many geographic and environmental challenges - for the establishment and development of a new industries and services in the region."
While everyone's aware it's early days, the people we've spoken to in Derby are very excited about the idea.
